Allergy Attack & Race Recap

Hello {sneeze} friends {sneeze}! And happy {sneeze} Monday  Wednesday!
Whew, allergies have been NO joke the past week or so!  I generally am not super affected by allergens in the air, but this year, I have been hit hard!  It has messed with my sleep, productivity and general well-being!
I have gotten some relief from a little allergy blend I made with my essential oils.  I went from not being able to breath very well to having only a little trouble.

The rest of last week was spent hanging out with my sweet nanny kiddos doing fun activities all around town, working on writing letters and their first ever race!!

I also got in some good workouts and the hubs even tried Zumba with me for the first time! He loved it!!

On Saturday I had my first race of 2016. I hope to get back to more races this year. I only did 3 last year! Compared to the 33.5 I did in 2014, it seemed like nothing.  The last month or so my hip had been bothering me again when I tried to run more than 2 miles 😦 If you read any of my Wild Workout Wednesday posts you will see that for this race I dropped from the half marathon to the 5k.  The closer it got to race day, the more thankful I became that I dropped down.  I did a lot of strength training and stretching with piyo and yoga for my hip.  It felt really good leading up to race day.

On Friday morning I headed over to the expo to get race packets for my 2 friends who live in a different part of town, and myself.  The past several years the expo was held at the same location, but this year it changed.  I am not sure why they changed locations, but I was not a fan!  It was further away and the parking was not sufficient for several thousand people!!  Packet pickup went pretty well even though the lines were pretty long for each station I had to go to.  They had a bunch of teenage volunteers helping out for each station and overall they did a pretty good job!  The expo itself was actually pretty large, and even a bit overwhelming.  I didn’t stop at too many of the booths.  Most were offering things I didn’t need at this time, or just some random items. I did stop at the last booth for a free chair massage.  Apparently I was SO tight all over my back, the lady giving the massage dug really deep!  It felt good at the time but later in the day I was SORE and my neck was stiff.
Friday night I ended up running the little 2k with the kiddos, their mom and uncle.  It was so much fun! I was so proud of the kids and even teared up a little when they crossed the finish line! #proudnanny
After the 2k, I went home, had some dinner and went to bed.  It took a while to fall asleep so I didn’t get as much sleep as I was hoping for.  I woke up several times thinking it was time to wake up! I finally rolled out of bed at 5:30 and got ready.  Only frustration was that I could not find my keys! I am glad I didn’t have to drive too far, otherwise, the key dilemma would have caused me to be really late.
I met up with my friends at 6:30 and I gave them their race packets.  We headed to the start line area and parted ways.  They were running the half! 🙂
The marathon and the half marathon runners took off.  As I watched them all run by, I was thanking myself for listening to my body and dropping down to the 5k. I probably could have gotten out there and finished the race, but I know for a fact my hip would have NOT been happy with me.
My goal for the 5k was to run as much as I could without pain and to finish strong!  About 10 min after the longer races took off, we all lined up! It was a gorgeous morning and I was feeling pretty good!
The horn blew and we were off.  I started off at a pretty mild pace.  Many runners passed me by so I stayed off to the side the best I could.  The nice part about this race course was that it was pretty wide.  They have changed the course over the last few years, and I really enjoyed this one.  I ran and heard my RunKeeper say 5 min, then 10 min, then 15 min.  What?? I have not run that long in a while.  The little training that I was able to do was all intervals! I know I am faster overall with intervals, but I wanted to see how my hip would do with this.  I took a 1 min walk break and then ran another large chunk.  I stopped briefly for some water and was back at the running.  I course didn’t seemed to be marked correctly, but I kept on plugging along.  Even in the midst of not running at my peek, I am still competitive.  I would see someone ahead of me going about the same pace, and I would see if I could catch up to them.  It keeps my mind off of negative thinking and gives me something to do.  Sometimes I catch the people and sometimes I don’t.
As we got closer to the finish line I got excited.  I was (and still am) shocked at how much of the race I actually ran.  Since I have run in this race series for several years, I know the finish line distance is a bit deceiving.  You think you are there and then you still have about .15 miles to go.  This was my best finish yet for these races.  I really picked up speed and crushed the end of my race.  When I glanced at my pace it was about 7:30 min/mile.  That is FAST for me.  I know some of my speedy friends out there run this pace for miles, and I admire you for that 😉
After I finished I received my medal, went to my car and changed my shirt, then headed to back to the race course to cheer on my friends!  They were booking it and doing fab!  I was able to see the first elite marathoner pass mile 25 at just over 2 hours since the race began!!! I am ALWAYS amazed at how fast they run! Simply amazing!
I saw my friends and then headed to meet them at the finish line! The finishers area was PACKED out.  I saw several friends and it was amazing to see so many supporters there for the runners!
Overall it was a great race day!
We did some brunching after the race and then I went home, showered and took a  2 hour nap before I babysat!
Sunday I woke up and my allergies were SO bad I could hardly function.  I spent most of the day in bed and even took 2 naps!  After my second nap the Hubs and I went to the phone store to get him a much needed new phone (poor guy was still on his iPhone4!!).
And that was it for the week!

    I think the allergies are hitting earlier this year, do you think so? We don’t have the cloud of yellow around here yet, but people all around are sniffling and all. Congratulations on your race and thank you for linking up!

      I feel they are earlier, but then taking to my family I realized they were bad around this time last year for me too! All I know is I’m thrilled the rain washed the pollen away the last 2 days!

    Wow, the allergies are tough. My son suffers from severe spring pollen allergies – I know that can be debilitating! Nice work on the race!

    Great job on the 5k and a fast finish! I’m glad your hip is feeling better. I had to start taking my allergy medication last week. Every year I take it solid for about 6 weeks beginning in late February when the tree pollen starts. When I was younger, I had no allergies! Thanks for linking with us Esther.

      Thank you Holly! It was a nice start to race season!
      Ugh allergies!! I never had them till I moved to Texas! I tried meds and they just made me more miserable, so I guess I’m sticking with some essential oils and hoping it passes soon!

    My friends who are really affected by spring allergies were complaining this week that they were starting to get hit hard. I consider myself lucky that I have very few spring allergies.

    How cool that there was a 5K to move to since your hip was bothering you. Congrats on running such a great race!
