16 in 16 & a training update

I have really enjoyed getting to meet new bloggers and see some familiar faces on this hop!

It has been a crazy few weeks in my real life.  If you missed some of the news, you can see it here & here.

We are only in month 2 of 2016, but I feel I have already learned a lot.  My goal the rest of the year is to take what I have learned and make changes, accept the facts, and continue to be the best me I can be.

So 16 things I have learned (or rediscovered) in 2016 (so far)…

  1. My need for things to be organized.  I have always been more of a neat person, but when life happens, my organization seems to be put on the back burner.  I was invited by some friends to participate in a 30 day cleaning/organizing challenge.  Even though I have not been able to participate each day, I have made some major headway on several areas of my life/home!  My heart feels happy when things are clean and organized! Plus I discovered a bunch of clothes I forgot about 😉
  2. I feel I am reminded of this each year…but really hits home during challenging times, who my true friends are. Friends who don’t care what I look like, but who care about and for my heart!  I am forever grateful for these friends, and it is my goal to be this kind of friend too!

  3. A greater appreciation for my husband and how he loves & cares for me.

  4. I left part of my heart in Costa Rica. {This is not a new discovery, but just a reminder to myself that I can be 2 places at once…at least in my heart}

  5. I am learning to love yoga…and to not be so scared to try new moves!  {But I am still trying to find a REALLY good mat that won’t fall apart after a few weeks and also won’t cost a ton! Any tips appreciated!!}

  6.  Pinterest hair designs for little kiddos…I really don’t know why I am late to the party on this one, but I have been having fun with all the little girl hair designs I get to do!
  7. After struggling with insomnia for YEARS, I finally found something that works for me!  A friend suggested this recipe to me! I was missing one ingredient, and I added one of my own, but this little gem is AMAZING!  I literally can be asleep in 5 min after putting this on! img_7684
  8. I have really been enjoying eating some all fruit/veggie meals lately, especially when it is go-go-go!
  9.  I might have put all the Christmas decorations away on Dec 26th in 2015 (to make room for a new couch), but this message just has to stay up year round! {And props to my hubby who thought I made it…I wish.}

  10. I have never been a fan of plastic bags at the grocery store.  My sweet friend Candace introduced me to THESE, and they are a lifesaver! Plus they look really cute 😉

  13.  I still am not that great with grief.  I am working on facing that better this year as I remember several sweet friends I lost in 2015.

  15. As this is National Eating Disorder Awareness Week, I feel it is my opportunity to share!  I am a survivor! I have been in solid recovery for the past 8 years(!!) after battling for more than 20! If you have any concerns or are struggling, or know someone who struggles, please reach out. You are WORTH fighting for, and for getting any help needed! NEDA has a great website with tools, and although I am not an expert, I am willing to share with you what I have learned from my experience!

  16. One wonderful point that I have rediscovered yet again is the amazing blogging community!  I am so thankful to be a part of such a wonderful group of people! You all make my heart smile and I love reading about your life adventures!  Thank you for including me on your journeys!

My next race is in 10 days!  Eek! I officially changed from the half marathon to the 5k.  I know that pushing myself would have only done harm to my hip and now foot, and it would not have been the PR I am seeking this year! So even though I am still somewhat disappointed, I am thankful that I can still race! And my dr is happy with my choice, so I guess there is that 😉
I had a REALLY great workout week last week! I would say it was probably the best week of workouts I have had in a long time.

Monday- Piyo and Zumba
Tuesday- Zumba and 6 mile bike recovery
Wednesday- Body pump and yoga
Thursday- Body pump
Friday- Piyo
Saturday- Full REST! I even got a 2 hour nap!
Sunday- 3.5 elliptical recovery miles

I have been able to do Body Pump 2-3 times a week as well as a yoga class 2-3 times a week and I have been able to see a difference in my strength, confidence and stamina!

Change in plans…

Happy Wednesday friends!  I hope you are doing well and enjoying your week!  I feel like I am still recovering from our little trip to San Antonio over the weekend.  I love to travel, but I am not a fan of the unpacking and recovery time.

Thank you for all the kind words last week about changing up my distance for my upcoming race.  I talked to the race director and I am pretty sure that is what I will be doing.  My hip has just not been really happy with me plus running has just not happened the way I have planned.  I have been discovering that I kind of stink at following a training plan…I really don’t know why.  So I will be dropping from the half marathon to the 5k, and then working on getting this hip back in shape before I pick another half to run.  I am disappointed in myself a bit, and in my body, but I am trying to stay focused on the positives.

My plan from last week:
Thursday- Body pump and hopefully 2-3 miles.
Friday- Piyo and a run outside
Saturday- Walk/jog outside- 5-6 miles
Sunday- Walk/rest day
Monday- Body Pump & maybe piyo and zumba.  Depends how I am feeling
Tuesday- 2-3 miles and Zumba
Wednesday- Body pump and yoga

What went down:
Thursday- Body pump

Friday- A walk with the kiddos.  A dr appt threw the plans a little, but that happens sometimes.
Saturday- Pretty much a rest day. I was worn out from traveling.  I did walk some before we watched the Spurs play, so I did get some steps in.

Sunday- Short walk and more rest
Monday- Body Pump! When I arrived at Zumba the gym lost power so they closed and there was not class 😦

img_7259Overall it was not a terrible week.  I def feel like my glutes, shoulders and triceps are getting stronger.  I was able to up my weights a bit in body pump for a few muscle groups, and the ones where I stayed the same I felt challenged but not like I was going to pass out!
I joined a little 5 day healthy heart challenge this week and getting points for workouts, sweaty selfies and eating fruits and veggies….so pretty much what I already do 😉

I am out of town again for a few days so we shall see how that works out with my training.  I hope I will stick to it better than last weekend.  Hehe

Thursday- 2-3 miles
Friday- 2-3 miles and 30 min of stretching
Saturday- Elliptical recovery 45 min
Sunday- 3-4 miles
Monday- Body Pump & maybe piyo and zumba- Gonna try this again!

Off to a Super Week

Happy Monday friends! Wow, the weekend went by way to fast, like always.  Actually the whole week seemed to go by quickly!  Between work, getting back to my training, celebrating the Hubs birthday, making Valentine’s cards, creating & eating yummy food, and working on getting my house back in order, I managed to still make time for some sleep and a mini road trip!

I worked on some Valentine’s cards with my nanny kiddos and some for my family & friends.

Ever since the beginning of December I have felt like a slacker of a house keeper.  Life has been uber busy with weddings, traveling for vacation (Costa Rica!!), the holidays, being sick and putting forth a great deal of effort to get better sleep, the house work has lacked.  It drives me crazy though because I am a bit of a neat freak and like to have everything organized.  Thankfully last week a friend posted she was taking place in a challenge for 30 bags in 30 days.  Basically a challenge to declutter and organize places in your home that have been neglected.  I am slightly embarrassed to admit how many places in my house need reorganizing.  Most evenings last week I spent 15-30 min working on some spots and it has been a huge help.  I missed a few days with our trip but I plan to get back on track! Here are a few of my spots from last week.  I hope this inspires me to really finish the neglected areas and to FINALLY finish my office!!


The Hubs had a great birthday celebration!  We did a mini celebration at home with a lovely dinner and some new Spurs gear.  Then we headed to San Antonio on Friday night and spent the weekend with his family and we went to the Spurs game! It was a blast!  They were playing the Lakers, and it was Kobe’s last time to play in SA.  They had a really nice tribute to him before the game began.  The game was a nail biter down to the last few seconds of the game, but I am happy to report the Spurs came out with a win!!  The Hubs had a great birthday!

We enjoyed spending time together during the Superbowl.  We played some Monopoly (one of the Hubs other birthday gifts), and enjoyed some yummy snacks. I think I almost ate the whole veggie tray!  The guac was a hit and we both devoured it!

Wild Workout Wednesday!

I am back! Yay!  I am feeling SO much better than I have been the past 2 weeks or so.  I was able to get back to the gym last week a few times and boy I was feeling the burn!  Taking almost 2 weeks off due to illness was def not in the plans (like it ever is), so I was thrilled to be back!  My voice is almost back to normal.  Another good thing!  I did NOT like sounding like I did while sick.

The past week this is what went down.  I will share from last Monday since I was off the week before.

Monday- Body pump- it was a new release and OH my goodness it was HARD!  Mix that with having some time off and I could hardly walk on Tuesday.


Tuesday- 2 elliptical miles and an hour of Zumba- it felt nice to stretch out my muscles a bit
Wednesday- Body pump again with a short elliptical warm-up.  I missed Zumba due to my car dying and needing a new battery!  I was bummed but thankful I was safe and able to get a new battery quickly.
Thursday- Body pump once again- I feel like I am getting a hang of the new release and my muscles were not as sore as they were on Monday.
Friday- 5 miles mixed between the treadmill and elliptical and piyo class- Needless to say, I was DRENCHED in sweat!  It felt good to be back at piyo


Saturday & Sunday- We had many friends in town so we ended up walking several miles to/from & at the Zoo on Sat and short walk on Sunday. 
Monday- Back to body pump plus a mile jog
Tuesday- More Zumba!  Was a blast with my friends and figuring out the new moves to the new songs we are doing in class!
Wednesday – Body pump this morning and used higher weights for a few of the tracks. Then I tackled some sprints on the mill.  I was having a hard time getting my breathing down today so I only did 10 sprint cycles instead of 20.

What is on tap-
Thursday- Body pump and hopefully 2-3 miles.
Friday- Piyo and a run outside
Saturday- Walk/jog outside- 5-6 miles
Sunday- Walk/rest day
Monday- Body Pump & maybe piyo and zumba.  Depends how I am feeling
Tuesday- 2-3 miles and Zumba
Wednesday- Body pump and yoga (this is for my teacher Andrea!!)

Half marathon training update- Well, it is a little over 4 weeks till the race.  Being sick really threw my training for a loop, so I have been trying to play catch up.  I was feeling a little stressed about the timing and was chatting with my training buddy.  She reminded me I can switch race distances if need be.  That made me feel better.  Considering my lack of consistent training and my hip issues, I will decide in the next 2 weeks what I will do.  I need to remind myself that it is NOT a bad thing to change if my body is saying it is NOT ready for the half.  There will always be another race!

February!

Hello friends!
It is a the start of a fresh week and a fresh month!  Wow, I can’t believe that January is already over!  I had some goals to accomplish last month but they just didn’t happen.  Struggling with insomnia the first 2 weeks was a bit rough, and then getting sick the last 2 weeks really put things on hold.  But that is life, and what can I do.  Getting myself back to full health has been the goal.  I did manage to get some workouts in last week.  For any of you who do Body Pump can we just groan in misery?? This new release is tough!  I managed to get in 3 classes last week and I have to say that today I did feel a little stronger, but more about that coming on Wednesday!

A little recap of the month
– Ran 31 miles (WAY under my goal, but considering the month I will take each mile!!)
– Participated in body pump, Zumba, and piyo classes

– Created/tried some new recipes (Gluten free pizza, Scottish porridge, taco soup, and black bean soup)

– Got creative in the kitchen and made my own organic deodorant and a massive batch of organic sugar scrubs


– Had lots of fun adventures with all my nanny kiddos

– Celebrated 2 years as a Sweat Pink Ambassador


– Got a new car battery on the way to mailing a bunch of fun packages!


– Had a fun zoo adventure with the Hubs and some friends

– Was blessed to get to see 2 of my college girls that I was an RA for back in the early 2000s!

– Was reminded of how fragile life is and to not take anything or person for granted!

– And prepare for the Hubs birthday!!

As I look back on January, I am even more determined to kick some booty on my Feb goals! Here are just a few of them to start

  • Run 75-100 miles
  • 2-3 BP classes, 1-2 Zumba classes and 1-2 Piyo classes a week
  • Blog 4-5 times a week
  • Continue to get 7-8 hours of sleep a night
  • Follow my meal plan (already off track…so will try again tomorrow)
  • Study 30-60 min each night
  • 30 min of organizing each night (on the days I am not traveling)
  • Celebrate the Hubs ALL month!
  • Make homemade Valentine’s Day cards and mail
  • Continue listening to the Daily Audio Bible and reading She Reads Truth!
  • Pay off 1 more acct
  • Get email accts down to less than 100 each (over 8000 now..)
  • Start Etsy page

Wild Workout & Training Update!

Hello friends!  It has been a little crazy and exhausting getting back into my workout routine!  I was still active on and off the last few weeks of 2015, but didn’t really get to the gym very much.  It felt SO good to be back last week!  I also got back into my training for the next half marathon that is on the books (March 5th)!

A little recap since last Monday

Monday- 2.75 elliptical miles
Tuesday- 3.83 elliptical miles and half a zumba class- I left a little early for date night with the Hubs
Wednesday- Body pump (hello muscles!!!), first 5k of 2016 (47:15 min….I have a LOT of work to do)

Friday- Rest and enjoying my new running coloring book by a fellow Sweat Pink ambassador, Sarah, and book by one of my favorite and inspiration runners, Danica.
Seriously, if you love to run, want to run, or just want to learn more about running, go get these books! (I am just putting them out there because I have really enjoyed them…not benefiting in any way other than sharing the awesomeness!)

Monday- Body pump (muscles are getting back into it!) plus 2 recovery elliptical miles

I have been a little sore, but really loving getting back to my training and routine!
I started using a supplement from Young Living called Ningxia Nitro, and I can totally tell a difference in my workouts!  So awesome!

Energy Balls Revisited

Hey friends!
Welcome to the most wonderful (and busiest) time of year!  If you are reading this Friday morning I am currently on a plane to GA and AL!  I get the privilege of seeing one of my dearest friends get married this weekend!  I also get to see one of my besties and some other friends too! I am so thankful for such wonderful friends and the ability to travel and spend quality time with each of them!
I met my sweet friend Kim a little over 15 years ago on a mission trip to Costa Rica and an instant friendship was born! Kim has been such a encouragement and support in my life over the years, and she is probably one of the kindest individuals I have ever met!  Her life shines for Jesus and she shares love with everyone she comes in contact with!  I can not wait to see her marry her love!  It is an honor to be there for her this weekend!  Love you Kim!!!!

This past week was a super packed week again.  I took a week off from blogging to refocus on some other areas of my life.  This past week the Hubs and I celebrated 2 years since his major heart surgery!  It so happened that one of my FAVORITE artists, Natalie Grant, was in town this week.  Her music really encouraged me through his surgery and recovery and it was the perfect time to do a lot of celebrating!

As this season of year is packed full of so many activities (and traveling for me), I revisited an old recipe for a fab snack that is packed with energy and fiber!
I am linking up once again with Farrah from Fairyburger, Annmarie from the Fit Foodie Mama, and Jess from Hello to Fit!! Our theme this week is dried fruit! One of my favorite ways to eat dried fruit is in a homemade trail mix.  My other fav way is in my homemade energy balls!

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 -3/4 cup peanut butter or almond butter
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/2 cup dried cranberries
  • 1/4 cup shredded coconut
  • 1/2 cup flax seeds
  • 3/4 cup mini-chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup chia seeds

Directions

  1. Mix all the ingredients together in a large bowl.  Place in the refrigerator for 30-60 min.
  2. Remove from refrigerator & form mixture into balls. Place in a storage container with a lid.
  3. Store them in the refrigerator. If you are anything like me, they will not last long!
