16 in 16 & a training update

Hello friends!  If you are here from the blog hop and/or her for the first time, welcome!  I am so glad to have you!  I am honored to once again be a part of the blog hop that Kristy from Runaway Bridal Planner put together.  Three cheers for Kristy! Hip, Hip, Hooray!

If you missed my post from the last hop, you can check it out and learn a few more facts about me.

I have really enjoyed getting to meet new bloggers and see some familiar faces on this hop!

It has been a crazy few weeks in my real life.  If you missed some of the news, you can see it here & here.

We are only in month 2 of 2016, but I feel I have already learned a lot.  My goal the rest of the year is to take what I have learned and make changes, accept the facts, and continue to be the best me I can be.

So 16 things I have learned (or rediscovered) in 2016 (so far)…

  1. My need for things to be organized.  I have always been more of a neat person, but when life happens, my organization seems to be put on the back burner.  I was invited by some friends to participate in a 30 day cleaning/organizing challenge.  Even though I have not been able to participate each day, I have made some major headway on several areas of my life/home!  My heart feels happy when things are clean and organized! Plus I discovered a bunch of clothes I forgot about 😉
  2. I feel I am reminded of this each year…but really hits home during challenging times, who my true friends are. Friends who don’t care what I look like, but who care about and for my heart!  I am forever grateful for these friends, and it is my goal to be this kind of friend too!
    img_7669
  3. A greater appreciation for my husband and how he loves & cares for me.
    img_6911
  4. I left part of my heart in Costa Rica. {This is not a new discovery, but just a reminder to myself that I can be 2 places at once…at least in my heart}
    img_4865
  5. I am learning to love yoga…and to not be so scared to try new moves!  {But I am still trying to find a REALLY good mat that won’t fall apart after a few weeks and also won’t cost a ton! Any tips appreciated!!}
    img_7534
  6.  Pinterest hair designs for little kiddos…I really don’t know why I am late to the party on this one, but I have been having fun with all the little girl hair designs I get to do!
  7. After struggling with insomnia for YEARS, I finally found something that works for me!  A friend suggested this recipe to me! I was missing one ingredient, and I added one of my own, but this little gem is AMAZING!  I literally can be asleep in 5 min after putting this on! img_7684
  8. I have really been enjoying eating some all fruit/veggie meals lately, especially when it is go-go-go!
  9.  I might have put all the Christmas decorations away on Dec 26th in 2015 (to make room for a new couch), but this message just has to stay up year round! {And props to my hubby who thought I made it…I wish.}
    img_7415
  10. I have never been a fan of plastic bags at the grocery store.  My sweet friend Candace introduced me to THESE, and they are a lifesaver! Plus they look really cute 😉
    img_6885-1
  11. Trying new recipes from other awesome bloggers after I pin them…It has been turning out rather deliciously!
    img_7568
  12. My elephant collection keeps growing…thanks to my husband!
  13.  I still am not that great with grief.  I am working on facing that better this year as I remember several sweet friends I lost in 2015.
    img_6722-1
  14. Lifting weights and working on my form has caused me to get stronger {logical, yet I was missing the beat before}
    img_6671
  15. As this is National Eating Disorder Awareness Week, I feel it is my opportunity to share!  I am a survivor! I have been in solid recovery for the past 8 years(!!) after battling for more than 20! If you have any concerns or are struggling, or know someone who struggles, please reach out. You are WORTH fighting for, and for getting any help needed! NEDA has a great website with tools, and although I am not an expert, I am willing to share with you what I have learned from my experience!
    img_7656-1
  16. One wonderful point that I have rediscovered yet again is the amazing blogging community!  I am so thankful to be a part of such a wonderful group of people! You all make my heart smile and I love reading about your life adventures!  Thank you for including me on your journeys!

My next race is in 10 days!  Eek! I officially changed from the half marathon to the 5k.  I know that pushing myself would have only done harm to my hip and now foot, and it would not have been the PR I am seeking this year! So even though I am still somewhat disappointed, I am thankful that I can still race! And my dr is happy with my choice, so I guess there is that 😉
I had a REALLY great workout week last week! I would say it was probably the best week of workouts I have had in a long time.
img_7128

Monday- Piyo and Zumba
Tuesday- Zumba and 6 mile bike recovery
Wednesday- Body pump and yoga
Thursday- Body pump
Friday- Piyo
Saturday- Full REST! I even got a 2 hour nap!
Sunday- 3.5 elliptical recovery miles

I have been able to do Body Pump 2-3 times a week as well as a yoga class 2-3 times a week and I have been able to see a difference in my strength, confidence and stamina!

Thank you for taking time to read so much today!  Can’t wait to see you all on Friday for Foodie Friday!  It is national pancake week so stay tuned for some awesome pancakes!

QOTD: What is something that 2016 has taught you?

Be filled with joy and health!

Another Wild Workout Wednesday!

Is it just me or do the weeks seem to fly by even faster at the end of the year?  I can not believe it is already creeping into the middle of November!  I was just telling a friend today that this weekend is my last full weekend at my house till January!  (Hmmm…I might need to break out the Christmas tree!!)
Between work, pet sitting, travel for weddings, seeing friends and Costa Rica, and the holidays, it is going to be a packed end of the year!  Even still, I am determined to keep up on my workouts! I am feeling pretty strong overall and have seen improvements in my flexibility!  I am working on pinpointing the next half marathon training plan I am going to go with since that will begin on Dec 1! Eek!  I normally go into races just aiming to finish and have fun, but I feel that 2016 will be a year of PRs! Even if I can cut a few seconds off my times I will know the effort was worth it.  Between now and Jan 1 I need to find all my previous PRs and get some goals in place!

So last week this is what I planned to work on:
Thursday- Zumba & boot camp
Friday- Either piyo or elliptical
Saturday- Body pump & piyo
Sunday- Bike
Monday- Body pump & Grit then volleyball if the sand is dry enough
Tuesday- Walk or elliptical then zumba
Wednesday- Body pump and yoga

Here is what happened:
Thursday- Walking, elliptical and body pump.
Friday- Walking due to last min work changes
Saturday- Ended up with pretty much a rest day
Sunday- Walking plus moving LOTS of furniture!
Monday- Body Pump and 2 hours of volleyball
Tuesday- Bike 4 miles and zumba
Wednesday- Body pump and walking

As you can probably tell by now, my weekly schedule does shift around some.  I have learned to be much more flexible with my workouts the past few years.  Before I was in recovery, I would FREAK if I could not work out exactly as I planned and it was usually for 4-6 hours of a 24-hour period!
I still love to workout, but finding a way for it to enhance my life and not see it as a punishment has been so freeing!

What is on the docket for this next week:
Thursday- Zumba (and a massage!!)
Friday- Piyo and walk/run to test out the hip and my knee
Saturday- Up in the air
Sunday- Kickball and hopefully a walk/run
Monday- Body pump & Grit (if time allows) then volleyball
Tuesday- Walk/run or elliptical then Zumba
Wednesday- Body pump and yoga

Wild Workout Wednesday!

Here we are at Wednesday again!  It has been another week filled with fun workouts!  Oh, and keep having to remind myself that going to the grocery store after the gym is really not the best idea!! Stick to the list Esther, just stick to the list!  Haha I am sure some of you can relate to the RUNGRY feeling!
Anyways, here was what was planned from last week:
Thursday- Try to walk/jog 3-4 miles
Friday- Piyo and 2 miles
Saturday- Body Pump or rest & LOTS of stretching and foam rolling!
Sunday- Race- was supposed to do the 10 miles, but I am sticking with the 5 for now.  If some miracle happens and I am up for it, I will do the 10. Plus LOTS of stretching and foam rolling!
Monday- Body Pump and volleyball
Tuesday- Zumba

And here is what actually went down:
Thursday- Body pump and biking for 21 min (6 miles)
Friday- Ended up more of a rest day due to a sick kiddo and working late.  I did manage a small walking workout.
Saturday- I managed to get up booty up and I went to piyo.  It felt great to get some good stretching in since my hip was a bit of a mess.
Sunday- The Texas 10 series race- 5 miles.  You can read my recap here if you so desire!
IMG_1999
Monday- Body pump and biking for 22 min
Tuesday- Elliptical for a little 5k, zumba and 20 min of walking
I am participating in a workout challenge with the focus of raising awareness for Batten Disease.

Batten disease is a rare, genetic, neurodegenerative disorder. Batten attacks an otherwise
healthy child beginning with vision loss, declined cognitive skills, and seizures.  Progressively, children suffer loss of memory and speech until they are mentally and physically incapacitated, eventually leaving them wheel-chair bound, then bedridden. With no current treatment or cure, Batten disease is always fatal, often by the late teens or early twenties.

There is a young boy in my community who was diagnosed a few years ago and his family has been challenging us to DO SOMETHING!  So these workouts are for Will!

IMG_2036Wednesday- Today was a great combo of body pump followed by an hour of yoga!  It was perfect for stretching out my super tight muscles and it really felt great on my hip!  I even attempted a new move today.  I almost fell on my face but I managed to hold the position/stretch!

IMG_2081
I have not been to just a yoga class in a LONG time!  I kept trying to make it but it hadn’t worked out till today!  I am always nervous about trying new classes.  I feel like I am going to be singled out or stared at since I usually don’t have a clue what the heck I might be doing!  Thankfully those thoughts are usually proven wrong and I am welcomed with open arms!

For the next week I am really trying to add in even more stretching and foam rolling!  I NEED to get this hip back to running more!  If anyone wants to be a stretching accountability buddy, let me know 🙂

On the agenda:
Thursday- Zumba & boot camp
Friday- Either piyo or elliptical
Saturday- Body pump & piyo
Sunday- Bike
Monday- Body pump & Grit then volleyball if the sand is dry enough
Tuesday- Walk or elliptical then zumba
Wednesday- Body pump and yoga

I am joining Annmarie from The Fit Foodie Mama, Angelena Marie from  Angelena Marie: Happy, Healthy & Balanced , Michelle at Fruition Fitness and  Nicole from Fitful Focus for Wild Workout Wednesday!
IMG_1700
Any plans for some new classes? How do you overcome your fears of trying something new? Have you been motivated to workout to help raise awareness for something?  Tell me about it!

See you soon for another workout Wednesday!

Have a healthy and joyful day!

BosuStrong Challenge, week 2!

Hey y’all!  Well, I dropped the ball a bit on the Bosu Strong challenge last week!  So I am going to shoot again for this week!  I was so inspired by so many of the posts that I saw on instagram and twitter!  I can’t wait to jump in this week and get back to the challenge!  I decided to shift some of my training to different days to incorporate the challenges into my workouts!  Last week I did the challenge moves, but on different days then they were posted for and felt silly always playing catch up, so here is to a fresh start for the week!

Stay balanced with week 2 of the #BOSUStrong challenge with BOSU

Got-Balance-

6 ways I stay balanced
If you forgot to join me last week for the #BOSUStrong challenge or just weren’t up for the cardio, make sure you join me this week as it’s all about the balance! We’re standing on one leg, lunging, and BOSU squatting our way through the week.

But balance means more than just being able to stand on one leg, it also means being able to do what you love while making healthy choices at the same time. It means putting in the work and still finding time for a little Netflix. Or eating the chocolate (of course) but balancing it out with loads of roasted veggies. Or 30 Day Shred (workout) and foam rolling/stretching (workout) at home when I can’t make it to the gym.

Here are the 6 ways I stay balanced – what are yours?

I make time for myself by carving out time before bed to reflect on the day.
My favorite me time is getting a massage.
My rule when it comes to a balanced diet is not forcing myself to eat foods I don’t like.
I make fitness a priority by planning it in my daily routine!
When I get stressed or overwhelmed, my go to is Zumba.
I do meal planning, prep and gym dates to help my family stay balanced.

Bonus:
Here are my fave 6 moves to help improve your balance (these are great on the Bosu but you can do them on the floor also!)

1. Stand with one leg on the Bosu, lift the other several inches off the ground- close eyes for 10-20 seconds.  Use your arms to help keep you balanced.
2. Side plank- Rest 1 forearm on the bosu.  Stack your feet and legs together, and lift your hips off the ground.  Your body should make a straight line.
3. Warrior III pose- stand on one leg.  Your other leg goes behind you in a straight line and your arms go in front of you.  Your body should be making the letter ‘T’ in this pose!
4. Push-up- Flip the bosu onto the dome.  Place hands on the outside of the flat area and do push-ups!  Start on your knees if you need and build up from there. Keep your back straight at all times.
5. One legged bridge- Lay on the floor with one foot on the dome of the Bosu.  Point your other leg towards the ceiling.  Push your foot into the dome and lift your hips towards the ceiling till your body makes a straight line. Hold for several seconds.  Repeat 10-15 times for each leg.
6. Pistol squat- (Advanced move that I am still working on)- Stand on the bosu on 1 leg.  Stick the other leg out in front of you.  Squat down and up.

So I want to know – are you #BOSUStrong? Copy and paste the above, fill it in and make it your own and then tag me in it and share with your friends! Let’s all be #BOSUSTRONG.

Five Things Friday: What’s New. . .

I am doing my first LINK up for Five Things Friday! Yahoo!  I have seen a few link-ups in the past few months and decided to finally join in!  So thank you to Courtney (Eat, Pray, Run DC), Cynthia at You Signed Up for What and Mar at Mar on the Run for linking up with all this fun!

FridayFiveLinkup

Today’s theme: What’s New!

1. For a while now years, I have had issues sleeping.  I have tried a variety of items over the years, prescription and natural, and it always comes back to me not getting enough sleep.
I saw this tea over the weekend at Trader Joes, and combined with this organic lavender lotion, I have had a few better nights of sleep this week!  Here’s to it working long term!!

2. The paste few months have been so nutty that my house has fell apart in terms of cleaning.  And it has overwhelmed me in many ways.  This week I started something new.  Each day I work a little at a time, and by the weekend it shouldn’t be so overwhelming!
IMG_8736
(This week I did a few days, and already feel less stressed….Let’s hope I can keep it up in the weeks and months to come!)

3.  I added a new yoga mat to my life this week!  I have been needing a new one for a while, and I did buy one recently, but it was too slippery for me, and I kept feeling like I was going to fall on my face during my piyo classes!
IMG_8769

4. I also got a new mini foam roller!  I need to foam roll more than I used to, and the foam roller I had was too big to travel with.  This new one is simply perfect for traveling!

I also received a new AMAZING foam roller at work today as a sweet gift from my boss! THANK YOU!

5. In case you missed my earlier post today, I am part of a foodie link up that will be taking place over the next few months!  Go check out some perfect picnic food!!

5 things….in my Gym Bag

I have seen a lot of really cute posts over the past few weeks especially about ‘five things.’  This week I decided to play along!  I am at the gym a few times a week, and I do outside workouts a few times as well.  For all my workouts I pretty much have the same essentials!
IMG_6371

1. Running shoes – Feet are unique.  One of the few brands that actually work with my feet are New Balance.  I have been running/working out in this style for the last 14 months and they have been great! And of course I am sporting my Sweat Pink shoelaces 🙂
IMG_6370

2. Heart Rate Monitor – I have been a faithful HRM wearer since 2004! Wow, that is 10 years 🙂
This is the one I have now.  I have been through a few over the years but I really do like the Polar ones.
IMG_6372

3. Energy Bits – These little tablets have made workouts and runs so much better!  I am still amazed at how they give me so much energy, keep me alert, focused and on track.  Since I started using bits back in January, I can see a huge difference when I forget to take them or if I run out.  Thankfully this little tin is a convenient way to grab what I need and have my energy source ready for me to use.
If you have never tried bits, or would like to place an order, you can go to http://www.energybits.com/ and use code RUNCHOCOLATE for 25% off any order! (Ps, a giveaway is coming soon…so stay tuned)
IMG_6378 IMG_6368

4. Injijni – A few years ago I tried the Vibram 5 finger shoes for a bit.  Although they are not a shoe I wear often, they did lead me to my all-time FAVORITE sock! They might look a little strange, but to me they are so comfy and since I began wearing them back in 2010, I have not had ANY blisters!  That is coming from the girl who had them ALL the time, even from small races!
IMG_6380

5.  Headbands – Since I discovered cloth headbands a few years ago there has hardly not been a day that I did not have one at at some point!  I LOVE headbands!  I have a few brands that work well with my head and the different activities I do.  From work, to the gym, to running around town to dressing up, I am a headband girl!
My fav brands are Bondi Band, BAMR Bands, Sparkly soul Inc, and MyBand headbands.
IMG_6374IMG_6377
A mix of my headbands and hair ties…I know I have more than are probably scattered around my house 😉
IMG_6376
A few of my FAV Bondi Bands!

There you have it!
What are 5 of your favorite things in your gym bag?
Do we have any of the same items?
